Cyclones’ ‘A’ team stuns Vernon-Verona-Sherill

NORWICH – The Norwich Cyclone “A” team stopped 2007 Tri-Valley League and New York State champion Vernon-Verona-Sherrill at Alumni Field Sunday, winning 12-0 and ending the Red Devils’ 26-game winning streak.
The game was a defensive stalemate until Kyle Edwards scored from eight yards out with 9:09 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Cyclones took to the air late in the third quarter with three straight completions from quarterback Michael Sutton – a 25-yard gem to Edwards, and 13- and 12-yard tosses to Michael Oralls, who reached the three-yard line.
Storm Cook recovered a V-V-S fumble after the ensuing kickoff at the Red Devils’ 25. The Cyclones lost the ball on a third-and-four from the 19. V-V-S then mounted a furious drive to the Cyclones’ 10 with 1:09 remaining. Jaden MacRabie then picked up a Red Devils fumble and raced 90 yards to the south endzone sealing the win.
Edwards led the Cyclones’ defense with Sutton, Cook, Trent Stone, MacRabie, Oralls, Lucas Lyons, Matt Craig, Robbie Wheeler, and the entire defense shutting out V-V-S.
Stan Foulds, “B” team head coach, did the coin toss before the A team’s game. Foulds has announced his retirement from coaching after 30 years, and was awarded a service plaque from Jim Edwards. Pete Smith, Mickey James and Bob Goodrich, the original founders of the program, stood with Foulds at midfield.
The Cyclone “B” team fell to the Red Devils, 22-6.
Jon Marvin and Spencer Stone were the mainstays on defense for Norwich, and Ethan Kelly had an interception. Cameron Edwards scored on a one-yard quarterback keeper for the Cyclones.
The Cyclones’ “C” team downed V.V.S. 20-7.
Killian Benedict opened Cyclones scoring in the first stanza on an eight-yard TD jaunt. Jon Manwarren recovered a Red Devils fumble in the endzone for a touchdown in the second, and Benedict added a 24-yard TD in the third. Alec Weaver and Jake Walsh added point-after touchdown runs.
On defense, Carlos Ithier recovered three fumbles with Nick Murphy and Dan Zieno also having recoveries.
Ian Stewart, Jordan Vinal, Trey Muserallo, Carter Hubbard, Nate Scheer, and Cole Rifanburg also played big defense.
The Cyclone “D” team had its best effort of the year. In “D” games, scores are not kept or announced based on league rules.
The Cyclones are at Camden next Sunday with games starting at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
The Cyclones cheerleaders will be at the Utica Auditorium on Saturday competing in the Tri-Valley cheer championship.
